The American Cinema Editors have announced their nominees for 2017 and a lot of the usual suspects are here, as are some surprises. Best Picture nominees at the Oscars, with a small number of exceptions, require a Best Film Editing nomination. Of the Best Picture contenders not on the below list, The Florida Project, Call Me by Your Name, Phantom Thread, Mudbound, and Darkest Hour are notably absent. “Comedy” seems to have been the operative word with ACE voters with Get Out, Baby Driver, and Three Billboards as questionable inclusions while true comedies and musicals like The Big Sick, The Disaster Artist, and The Greatest Showman were left off.
Molly’s Game is probably the most unusual inclusion here as the film isn’t considered much of an Oscar contender, but might now be with this inclusion. Blade Runner 2049 gets a nice shot in the arm as its flagging campaign was dependent on a strong showing among the craft guilds, which may be in the works after this, especially for a film that is features a relatively leisurely pace. Upcoming guilds to look at for more clues include Art Directors and Writers tomorrow and Make-Up Artists and Producers on Friday.
