Not much to show this coming weekend. We have one new big screen release (Season of the Witch) and one new documentary release (Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune).
Consensus
Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.
Season of the Witch: We aren’t interested (100%) and to talk about this film’s Oscar chances is a bit ludicrous (100%). Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune: We may be split on whether to see it or not (50%), but an Oscar contender it is not (100%).
I’m so sick of Nic Cage slumming for paychecks. This looks neither appealing nor necessary. If he keeps doing this, I’m going to forget that he ever won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas.
Thoughts
January is usually a dumping ground for films the studios have little faith in. This one seems to fit that mold.
Thoughts
Nicolas Cage and action hero don’t sit well together for me.
Thoughts
January is the month where bad movies go to die. This is one of them.
I’m not a fan of documentaries, and while docs on individuals you aren’t familiar with can often be insightful, you have to have a passion for the subject to want to sit down to it…or it needs to at least have a decent trailer. This has neither aspect.
Thoughts
Looks more like a PBS special than a feature film release.
Thoughts
This looks like it could be an interesting documentary on an underappreciated artist.
Thoughts
I’ve never heard of Phil Ochs and have no desire to learn anything about him.
One response to “Looking at the Weekend: January 7-9, 2011”

I wholeheartedly agree that January releases are for the most part, completely awful. However, Youth in Revolt opened in January 2010, and it’s still my favorite film of the year. There are so few exceptions to that rule, and I don’t see Season of the Witch being one of them at all.
