This weekend gives us two precursors, but only one we’ll be prediction. Both are on Sunday. The one we’re taking some shots at picking winners is the American Society of Cinematographers. The other, the Online Film & Television Association’s Film Awards, is not a group we would feel comfortable prediction. Reason 1) all of the contributors here are members. 2) I already know the results So, here are our thoughts on ASC for Sunday.

Wesley Lovell: The ASC is one of the few groups that will incessantly award its favorite cinematographers, even if they aren’t going to win Oscars. And since Deakins is a popular DP, I’d say he has the best chance at winning this prize. If they are infused with enough armchair Oscar prognosticators who want to try and influence that race, they may go for one of the other Best Picture nominees selected here, but more specifically the two frontrunners, The King’s Speech or The Social Network. Neither are very traditional cinematography winners, though, so True Grit, which does take place largely in exteriors (a favorite for cinematographers) is still the favorite. I think if any other film can win here, it’s Black Swan, which has a completely different feel than the others and relies heavily on lighting effects and camera angles to create the off-kilter dream-like world of many scenes.
I agree, this is one list where I’m delighted with all of the nominees (despite 127 Hours getting left out). The King’s Speech made great use of it’s muted colors and wide angle lenses, Black Swan’s furious handheld camerawork that utilized the contrasting of blacks and whites in a color palette, The Social Network’s darkened off-colors, True Grit’s naturally lit vistas and Inception’s subtle color differences between dreamscapes. But, yes, it would be nice to see Roger Deakins finally win after being nominated for 4 Coen Brother movies already (True Grit would be his fifth), because he’s deserved wins so many times before (Fargo and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford come to mind.)
Honestly I am really upset that 127 Hours didn´t get a nomination. It´s really impressive…..But from the list I like to see Deakins winning his deserved trophy.
This is another category which if either one wins I’ll be delighted, they all were wonderful images.
But my personal pick is True Grit, and mr. Deakins deserve his oscar, he’s got 9 nominations and the academy obviously loves True Grit so I also think he’s got a good chance.
