Former box office god Jim Carrey will be hoping to steal the thunder of DC’s Green Lantern but will family audiences be able to topple the venerable comic book geek contingent?
Consensus
Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.
The Green Lantern: We are evenly split on seeing it versus being unsure (50%) but we all agree that Oscar tech categories will be where this one has a chance (100%).
Mr. Popper’s Penguins: We agree completely that this looks to be an unmitigated disaster (100%) and that it won’t contend at the Oscars (100%)
The Art of Getting By: Either we aren’t sure or aren’t going to see it (50%) and Oscar will likely feel the same (50%).
Page One: Most of us are torn on whether to watch the film (75%) and we’re split evenly on whether Documentary Feature will be a good category for it to compete in (50%).

ThoughtsI’m not as excited about this as I was about other comic projects this year. The visual effects don’t look terribly good in previews, but I’m a Ryan Reynolds fan, so I’ll still check it out. |
ThoughtsWaiting for the reviews. If they’re good, I’ll give it a shot. If not, I won’t bother. |
ThoughtsThis looks like a pretty second-rate superhero movie. |
ThoughtsWith the exception of “Batman” and “Superman,” DC hasn’t really been as successful as Marvel when it comes to adapting their properties to the big screen. However, while I’m not wild about the idea of Ryan Reynolds as the title character, the trailers have looked pretty good and I’ve enjoyed director Martin Campbell’s work on films such as “Goldeneye,” “The Mask of Zorro,” and “Casino Royale.” It could be fun. |

ThoughtsI prefer Carrey when he’s more subdued. This does not look like one of those films. |
ThoughtsJim Carrey acting like a jackass…again. No thanks. |
ThoughtsThis looks like a pretty third-rate children’s movie. |
ThoughtsThis looks really bad, even for Jim Carrey. |

ThoughtsIt could be ok, but I’m leaning towards the likelihood of it being disappointing. |
ThoughtsLoks like another lame teen comedy. |
ThoughtsThis doesn’t look very memorable, but I may check it out sometime. |
ThoughtsI had never heard of this movie until just now. I’ll wait and see the reviews before deciding on this one. If I do see it, it will be on DVD. |

ThoughtsI would like to say I’d watch this on DVD, but I probably won’t ever find the time. |
ThoughtsThere have been plenty of great dramatic and comedic films about newspapers, not sure how a quasi-documentary of one will come off. Seems like it might be worth a look. |
ThoughtsThis footage looks great. |
ThoughtsSee my comments on “The Art of Getting By.” The same rules apply. |
