There is no question that Harry will top this weekend’s box office, but by how much? Could it approach The Dark Knight‘s impressive $158 million opening? I doubt it. However, the last film grossed $125 over the weekend and although this one has a 3D element, 3D won’t make up a lot of its gross. I’m guessing $130-$135 is possible placing it fifth in the all-time wars. A higher gross would mean it may top Transformers 3 as the year’s biggest film.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Harry Potter 7 II: Not a film to be missed and even Oscar may take notice.
Winnie the Pooh: Mostly a family film that should benefit nicely from admiration of the main character.
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: Could this be a surprise hit with critics this Summer?

This is the biggest event film in eight years (when Return of the King came out). It represents the end of an era and I will be proud to be in the theater to see it.

Thoughts

This is bound to be a box office phenonmenon that you’ll just “have to see”, so why not brave the crowds and be among the first to check it out?

Thoughts

Most of films have been strong nominees in the technical categories, and look for the Battle of Hogwarts to compete there too.

It’s hard for me to get excited about a film I’ve seen so little about and which doesn’t feature characters I care much about. In the end, when I finally start catching up on my Completist’s Disney (I’ve seen every Disney animated feature up to Mulan and a handful after), then I might pick it up.

Thoughts

For the kid in you.

Thoughts

When Disney brings back one of it’s most beloved franchises, it has to play into the animation field.

My interest lies solely in its director who directed one of my favorite under-appreciated films of the 1990’s, The Joy Luck Club.

Thoughts

Wayne Wang’s films are always interesting and this one about two young girls who invent their own language looks to be no exception.

Thoughts

Wayne Wang is a wonderful filmmaker, but even his best films (Smoke, The Center of the World) haven’t been able to break though with Oscar.
