Review: (#1, C+) Reminiscent of past designs for this series, infusing it with the fiery elements of the concept is a fitting preview.

(#2, B+) Although there aren’t a lot of details, the attempt to create some visual distinctiveness is notable. The halo of fire, the haunting overwatching stare of the villain, it speaks well to the film’s premise while reminding the viewer of who the characters are and reminding them of its origins. (#3, C+) While the contraptions are unique and appealing, it looks simply like a scene from the film, which is a bit lazy. (#4-#9, C+) Format designs that double as character posters is an interesting idea, though considering the selection of images, it may have been unintentional (considering the duplicate inclusions). They are simple like all character posters should be but that only plays into the idea of laziness for designs focused on every potential screen/theater/sound format possible. (#10, B-) It doesn’t have the visual strength of design #2 but features the same series of images with a few alterations just in a less pleasing and more bland structure.

(#11-#19, C+) While these character posters are somewhat unique between each, the similarities are too strong though credit given for ensuring the overall color schematic for each is fitting.

Trailer Rating: B / C+

Review: (#1, B) If you’re already a fan of this series, you are prepared to buy a ticket in advance. This trailer does justice to the property and will no doubt excite many. The only problem is that those who weren’t quite sold on the second film might see some of the same mistakes creep into the trailer. Namely, it feels like similar themes and situations will persist. The redeeming quality here is that the new tribe of Na’vi join the villain’s side rather than the hero’s. That should give viewers hope for something at least modestly new.

(#2, C+) XXXX

Oscar Prospects:

It will be an Oscar contender but how many awards it will compete for is not likely as many as its predecessors.
