Review: (#1, C) A black-and-white design that fits the cinematographic quality of the New Wave might seem like a wise idea but it does nothing to excite any but the most hardcore of film enthusiasts, though that might just be enough. (#2, C+) Although there’s more detail in this design, it’s not that much more interesting. It’s still a black-and-white affair and it’s evident a film is being made but the aesthetic doesn’t quite capture the imagination like it should and once again the film looks to be limiting its reach and influence to fans of the French New Wave.

Trailer Rating: B / B+

Review: (#1, B) Similar to the feel of a French New Wave film, the first trailer engages cineastes’ interests but feels like lip service rather than homage. (#2, B+) The second trailer, however, does a much better job conveying the film’s complex setting and premise blended with the elements of New Wave energy to create something that might actually engage fans of masters like Jean-Luc Goddard and François Truffaut.

Oscar Prospects:

Richard Linklater has an on-again-off-again relationship with the Academy and while his other 2024 release is unlikely to pique their curiosity, this New Wave biopic could be his ticket back.
