Multiple horror films, one film releasing wide without reason, and one film starring someone who’s appeared in numerous blockbusters. It’s obvious that The Smashing Machine will come out on top of these films. However, there’s a stealth contender for the top new release and that’s the new Taylor Swift “film.”

OTHER RELEASES

We are only looking at films that have had trailers released on Rotten Tomatoes’ trailer YouTube Channels. Below are some other films that are releasing this weekend that we haven’t considered.

Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl (Wide)
Are We Good? (Limited)
Counted Out (Limited)
The Ice Tower (Limited)
Miss Valentine (Limited)
Orwell: 2+2 = 5 (Limited)
Peas and Carrots (Limited)
Pistachio Wars (Limited)
Scared Shitless (Limited)

Soul of a Nation (Limited)

WIDE RELEASES
ANEMONE BONE LAKE GOOD BOY THE SMASHING MACHINE

Anemone

Wesley Lovell: For the celebrated return to acting for its star, it looks like a film unworthy of his talents.

Pete Patrick: For Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Bean.

Thomas La Tourrette: Usually Daniel Day-Lewis is worth watching, but I am dubious about this film. The cinematography does look very good.

Bone Lake

Wesley Lovell: I’ll admit I’m curious. This doesn’t look like your garden-variety horror film and that intrigues me.

Pete Patrick: This week’s horror movie is something I tend to avoid.

Thomas La Tourrette: Pretty people, but the trailer turns me off with way too much violence.

Good Boy

Wesley Lovell: A horror film where the “final girl” is a dog? That sounds quite interesting even if the trailer doesn’t make it look like it.

Pete Patrick: Two wide release horror films in one week is even worse.

Thomas La Tourrette: Horror is not my favorite genre, though doing the movie from the dog’s perspective might make it more interesting. I will still pass.

The Smashing Machine

Wesley Lovell: I don’t really care for Dwayne Johnson and think this looks like an abysmal biopic.

Pete Patrick: For Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt

Thomas La Tourrette: I am not that big a fan of wrestling movies, but the Oscar buzz around Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt may make it one I have to see, though the trailer was pretty tepid.

LIMITED RELEASES
COYOTES FAIRYLAND SHELL

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Nothing here really appeals.

Pete Patrick: Fairyland looks compelling, the other two look like something to avoid.

Thomas La Tourrette: The trailer for Fairyland did not excite but the reviews make it sound worth seeing. Coyotes just looks bad and Shell seems too much a copy of The Substance.
