Review: (#1, C+) The expected tease, taken from the first film’s design, is fitting but otherwise innocuous.

(#2, C+) The focus on black-and-white characters with a red numeral is suggestive of horror film aesthetics without being horrific. Simplistic perhaps. (#3-#6, C) These individual shots take the prior design’s aesthetic and make it even more simple as character posters and it doesn’t work better.

Trailer Rating: B / B

Review: (#1, B) “Vogue” is a fitting track for this trailer and timing it to Miranda Priestly’s heel strikes is about as rhythmically compelling as it can get. This is just a teaser but it does generate some heat.

(#2, B) “Vogue” is back again and this time isn’t as well used but we get more of the snarky back-and-forth fans of the original will be coming for. I was more interested in that shot of Miranda Priestly in the empty night street but that moment isn’t likely to strike many and, without context, does feel like an odd inclusion.

Oscar Prospects:

The first film pulled in a nomination for star Meryl Streep and Best Costume Design. Sequels are a bit trickier, though it’s the first film Streep has contended for in a while, so it could still result in a nomination. Whether Emily Blunt will make the cut this time is an open question.
