Review: (#1, C+) Just enough detail to tell the audience it’s post-apocalyptic but not enough to excite. (#2, C+) A better representation of apocalyptic intent but won’t win over many non-Greenland fans. (#3-#5, B+) If it weren’t for that vast empty white space, these designs would be top-notch (though, I can’t really imagine a way to reduce that without enlarging the images, which would be ok). They are still pretty impressive with the explosive elements taking chunks out of the star. These are rather grand character posters, better than many studios produce. (#6, C+) For all the effort put into the character posters, it makes these standard designs look like minimal effort was put in.

(#7-#9, C) A new batch of character posters that return to the commonplace usage with slight deviations on the backdrop but nothing remarkable to allow them all to stand out.

(#10, C) Other than a location change, this doesn’t differ significantly from prior designs.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B-

Review: (#1, C+) Having Gerard Butler introduce the film in his thick Scottish accent starts the trailer off on the wrong foot. Butler is not a box office draw and shouldn’t be positioned as such. What follows isn’t anything that looks unique or interesting from a post-apocalyptic concept so it might have to coast on the good will the first film generated.

(#2, B-) The first trailer did a better job connecting the sequel to its predecessor but this one does better helping everything to stand on its own. The idea of building a new society built on promising ideals has a certain appeal in our current political climate and that might be enough to encourage some attendance and a review of the first film to understand where things are going. Disaster movies used to be so much more fun and this looks like at least a decent spiritual successor to films like Independence Day.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
