Review: (#1, C) At times, the animation is grating but the trailer wants to sell the audience on a master writer while feeling like it’s celebrating a famed filmmaker. It’s vibrant and Sylvain Chomet’s name is referenced but the Marcel Pagnol references don’t land well enough to explain who he is or why the viewer should be excited to see an animated biopic.
(#2, C+) There’s not a lot this second trailer does except try to better explain who Marcel Pagnol was and why is story has any interest to the audience. Still, Pagnol’s work might appeal to a small subset of cineastes while many will be familiar but uninterested in seeing his history done in animation.
Oscar Prospects:
It was on the list of eligible films for 2025 and didn’t make it through. Perhaps with a bit more advanced play it might have done better.
