Review: (#1, C) A mediocre design, the background is indistinct enough to not explain the setting while Riz Ahmed’s translucence adds no creative energy to the design. The pale blue lettering on the reds and oranges of the main image contrast poorly.

Review: (#1, C) Shakespearean dialogue is very distinctive and makes theater sometimes feel a bit antiquated and while there is an audience for that, modern ones aren’t as transfixed by it. That means it makes sense to establish the film as having very little of that, focusing on a few phrases that sound modern when set contextually within a modern framework. It’s difficult to tell this is set in London as much of the action takes place in a Hindustani underground. That foreign appeal might help the film find an audience but they may ultimately be surprised by the content.

Oscar Prospects:

Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works and its quality has endured for centuries making it a frequent contender for the Oscars. That said, the April release seems like a bad sign.
