Review: (#1, C+) There isn’t much to this and if it weren’t for the DC logo, this title would look like yet another pointless horror feature. It still doesn’t entirely shake off that appearance.
(#2, B-) The fragmented image technique doesn’t add enough depth to the content to make the image stunning. It creates an interesting effect that will draw the viewer but there’s not enough beyond that to get excited about. (#3, B) Drawing inspiration from the opening title sequences of Netflix’s Daredevil, turning the skyline and advancing figure into 3D constructs of blood conveys the needed horror elements but that empty white background doesn’t make enough sense. (#4, C+) Using a still image from the film adds little creative energy but it makes the horror film somewhat more palatable to foreign markets that don’t appreciate bloody public displays.

Review: (#1, B-) Marvel once tried to do the horror genre send-up and didn’t succeed. This doesn’t quite look like it will be much better. The brief visual effects of the melted face are interesting but it’s difficult to find much to get excited about with the plot so amorphous.
(#2, B) The horror elements have been minimized this outing and the story is given full details. That gives the story some emotional resonance and establishes the origin of this figure but does little to suggest where the picture will take that.
(#3, B) The marketing team for this film knows who they are trying to target and that’s horror fans. With few references to this being a DC comics property, lots of tense scenes, and a focus on the intense makeup (if they aren’t CGI) effects will make this appealing to a narrow demographic but they should now be finally sold on the property.
Oscar Prospects:
A Best Visual Effects or Best Makeup & Hairstyling nomination is possible depending on where it’s classified.
