Review: (#1, C+) Taking inspiration from posters for Smile, this design doesn’t generate enough creative energy to entice the viewer even if it ties well into the film’s trailer.

(#2, C) Every horror poster design seems to think, red with black shading and white titling is the best way to design a poster but it makes the background and the look on Jessica Chastain’s face harder to read. (#3, B-) This is a much more effective way to shade a poster. Taking the prior design and shifting the colors to cooler shades of blue and using white and yellow lettering sets this design apart from most of the other ones out there and gives it a chance to strike into the minds of potential viewers. (#4, C) The solitary tear is antithetical to the smile, which is supposed to give the audience thematic context but when compared with the trailer, it makes little sense. That and the simplicity of the design makes it instantly forgettable. (#5, C+) This uses the same tears/smile concept as the prior design but makes it feel a little more unnerving but the heavy lifting is in the way she’s cradling the child’s head. It’s almost as if she’s ready to snap her neck and that’s what gives it the that unnerving quality.

(#6, C) What didn’t work about the all-red monstrosity of design #2, has the same effect this time around. Sure, it gives the viewer a smiling, sad entity, it does little to tell them what is most exciting about the film other than it being a cheaply marketed horror film with an Oscar-winning star on board.

Trailer Rating: B+ / B-

Review: (#1, B+) Before settling into familiar horror film trailer tropes, the film establishes itself with an intriguing central character who cries as she stands to wreak havoc and then culminates in a genuinely well earned jump scare. It’s all down hill from there but if that one moment does anything, it will cement in the mind of the viewer that someone knows how to do it and the film might actually work surprisingly well.

(#2, B-) While the tension of the slow burn of the prior trailer has been replaced with a frenetic energy, the concept persists as an intriguing one that horror fans are likely to latch onto. Unfortunately, the conventional horror tropes are more evidence in this trailer than they were before, which might hinder its broad appeal.
