Review: (#1, B) When employing a backdrop to an image with limited visual details, this is an effective way to make it look striking without sticking to a single, lifeless color. The hand-drawn figures making up the trio at the core of the poster are well done with the inset of Adam Driver’s character threating to shoot some unknown target are visually compelling without being excessively detailed.
Trailer Rating: C / B

Review: (#1, C) A period drama that wants to tie into mob drama but can’t quite figure out how to sell its characters as figures audiences will want to spend time with. It’s a dull drama with familiar tropes that will require something more intriguing to make it a success, James Gray fans notwithstanding.
(#2, B) Going for a Michael Mann-style Heat aesthetic, this period crime thriller features strong anchor performances and compelling, if familiar, narrative elements. It is a striking design that will appeal to those familiar with and appreciative of Mann’s work but won’t quite bring others to the cineplex.
Oscar Prospects:
Every new James Gray movie is said to be the one that will to break his Oscar curse and every time it’s wrong. This one looks like it could go either way. We’ll have to wait for the reviews.
