None of this week’s films really scream box office bonanza, but the one that most easily targets young audiences (Footloose) is the most likely to win it.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

The Big Year: I think the producers have underestimated the target audience for this kind of film. How many ornithologists do they expect to come out?
Footloose: Reviews are trickling in on the positive side, so it could be a hit.
The Thing: A remake of a classic, which is in turn a remake of another classic. The pedigree is there and that it’s been done well twice in the past suggest it could be done well a third time.
The Skin I Live In: Even for Pedro Almodovar’s fans, this one seems to be straining interest.

Neither Jack Black nor Steve Martin have been funny in a number of years, so I’m not really that interested.

Thoughts

An entire film about bird-watching, at least it’s something that’s never been done before, but not different enough to pique my interest.

Thoughts

The kind of comedy that bombs with the Academy.

Young adult dance movies aren’t my cup of tea. Remakes of such are right out. (Solo Oscar Chance: Original Song)

Thoughts

Seemed to be another waste of time remake, but E.W. gave it an A- so maybe there’s more to it than meets the eye in the trailer. (Solo Oscar Chance: Original Song)

Thoughts

Musicals can sometimes pick up some random below-the-line nominations, and look for this one to compete for the same.

Thoughts

I never saw, nor plan to see, the original, so a remake isn’t in the cards.

Thoughts

The is a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film which was itself a remake of Howard Hawks’ 1951 film, both of which are now classics.

Thoughts

Another pointless remake that won’t appear on Oscar’s screen.

The idea is intriguing, but the trailer is not. It might be worth checking out on home video.

Thoughts

Almodovar is always interesting, but I’m not quite sure to make of this, his plastic surgery opus.

Thoughts

Almodovar has surprised in the past decade by showing up nomination morning several times, but this film doesn’t have the same great buzz.
