Welcome to our third week. We have six new films opening this weekend (at least that we have written comments on). Three are wide releases and three are in limited. Note that the Oscar Chances section for El Secreto de Sus Ojos is missing. Since this film won the Oscar for Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Oscars, we are not predicting it for further Oscars (for those who don’t know, a nomination at the Oscars in Foreign Film disqualifies a film for future Oscar consideration).

The lists below are ordered alphabetically, not in the order which we think they will perform at the box office (for that matter, Kick-Ass is clearly the most likely). Anyway, please continue to enjoy our comments and if you have any of your own, please leave them for us.

Thoughts

I didn’t see the original even though it looked amusing. The trailer for this has moments, but I’m still not that interested.

Thoughts

The original British film was funny, this looks labored.

Thoughts

Neil LaBute is a pretty solid American voice, and with an eclectic cast this film looks like a hoot.

Thoughts

It’s an unnecessary remake of a mediocre film that is less than 3 years old. I’ll pass.

Well, I’ve seen nearly every other superhero film/spoof, so why not see this one? It looks like it could actually be good, though.

Thoughts

An R-rated movie with an 11 year-old hero. Who is the audience for this?

Thoughts

If the Internet grapevine weren’t so strong I wouldn’t be too keen, but if it is as good as everyone says it should be a solid, sleeper hit.

Thoughts

It was received with a lot of enthusiasm when it premiered last month at the SXSW Film Festival. If it continues to receive critical support and becomes a hit at the box-office, it could be just the sort of movie to benefit from a 10 film Best Picture line-up. And even if it doesn’t register in the Best Picture race, I wouldn’t be surprised to see scene-stealing Chloe Grace Moretz show up in the Best Supporting Actress race. Regardless, I’ll be there on opening weekend.

The film just doesn’t appeal to me, at least from what I’ve seen in the trailer.

Thoughts

Looked like it might be interesting but then I realized this is from the director of the stupefyingly bad remake of Angels in the Outfield.

Thoughts

I love baseball, and it is nice to see the always solid Clifton Collins Jr. in a central role.

Thoughts

I hadn’t heard of it prior to today, and having read the premise, it sounds like a dreadful bore.

Don’t have a lot of time, so documentaries tend to fall at the bottom of my list of interest. This subject doesn’t appeal to me, so it won’t even make the list.

Thoughts

I have no interest in seeing a pseudo-documentary about graffiti artists.

Thoughts

I usually pay attention to documentaries based on interest in the subject matter or reviews. I’ll wait for the reviews for this one.

Thoughts

It will likely be a finalist for Best Documentary Feature. The premise is intriguing and it is a bona fide critical darling, currently holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The trailer has me sold. With terrific actors and an interesting premise, I will try to see this as soon as I can.

Thoughts

Another theatrical release that looks like a made-for-TV movie. I’ll wait for the DVD or its first showing on cable TV.

Thoughts

The kind of film that could be entertaining or could be horrible, I’ll wait to decide when it shows up on Netflix.

Thoughts

It sounds like it might be amusing, but if I see it, I’ll wait for it to come out on Netflix rather than see it at the theater.

Thoughts

It won the Oscar, so it will eventually end up in my Netflix queue.

Thoughts

The Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film over The White Ribbon? Of course, I’ll see it though it may have to wait for DVD given the way foreign films are distributed these days.

Thoughts

As the reigning Oscar champ, I will definitely check it out at home in a few months

Thoughts

I’ll see it because it won Best Foreign Language Film. I’m not sure that it will open in my city, but if it does, I’ll watch it. Otherwise, I’ll wait for it to come out on DVD.
