The Broadcast Film Critics Association, who call themselves the “Critics’ Choice” despite only representing a fraction of working critics, have announced their annual Oscar predictions…I mean award nominations. As expected, The Artist, Hugo and The Help were among the most nominated with Drive doing much better than I would have expected from this group. Each category looks, more or less, like the conversations we’ve been having about nominations for Oscars this year, which often makes me wonder if members don’t just vote for their personal Oscar predictions instead of their personal best or if their taste is so Oscar voter-like that it just looks that way. Several films and nominees are helped and hurt by these nominations, but some rumination is needed before fully assessing that.
