We have three new wide releases this week including the latest Russell Crowe/Ridley Scott epic, an Italy-set romantic drama, and a basketball physical therapy romance.
Consensus
We agree 100% on the following: Letters to Juliet: Not an Oscar contender Just Wright: Not an Oscar contender & none of us will be watching it
With Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, there is little doubt in my mind that this will be spun as a major Oscar contender. While I am very likely to catch the film, I may not be able to opening weekend.
Thoughts
I will probably see this as I’ve seen just about every other film about Robin Hood, even though I really have low expectations.
Thoughts
I have grown tired of Russell Crowe (especially as an action hero), and while I like both Gladiator and the Robin Hood legend, this just reeks of staleness.
Thoughts
I honestly don’t have any idea how this one is going to turn out, which is why I went with “Minor Contender” here. This could either be a major contender like “Gladiator,” or it could be a non-contender like “Kingdom of Heaven.” We’ll have to see how it fares with the critics and at the box-office. That said, I’ll probably end up watching it, but I’m not going to rush out and see it.
I think this looks a bit too sappy, but Vanessa Redgrave at least looks interesting. I would say Vanessa could be a contender, but I don’t even believe it myself.
Thoughts
Sounds like a lame chick-flick but could be something more. I’ll probably check it out on DVD or cable TV sometime down the road.
Thoughts
Some really interesting actors, but the film looks like a paint-by-numbers romance.
Thoughts
It looks unwatchable to me, but then again I’m not a 15 year old girl.
