It’s hard to know what’s going to be tops at the weekend box office. At first, I thought the long awaited return of the Wachowski Siblings would put Cloud Atlas at the top of the heap, but it’s releasing in a modest sub-2,000 theaters, which limits its strength. Meanwhile, the tween-oriented, Halloween-themed Fun Size and the long-gestating horror sequel Silent Hill: Revelations are opening far wider, giving both a chance at topping the weekend. I’m going to hedge my bets and suggest that Silent Hill doesn’t have the pent up anticipation most horror sequels have and give the slight benefit to Fun Size.
Individual Commentaries
Wesley Lovell: The week provides a number of intriguing possibilities from the American remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s career-defining film Pusher to the cute, tween-leaning Halloween adventure Fun Size to the Tom Tykwer/Wachowski Siblings collaboration, a time-twisting epic romantic drama to the visually subversive Silent Hill sequel. The only film that doesn’t look worth anyone’s time is the Karate Kid-meets-surfing film Chasing Mavericks. Peter J. Patrick: My pick of the week is a toss-up between Chasing Mavericks and Cloud Atlas. While Chasing Mavericks looks like a formulaic inspirational sports film, the sport is surfing which is a subject that has not been over-exploited on film and may be worth catching. Cloud Atlas looks to be a stunning, though possibly confusing, fantasy film that may or may not be worth the time. Tripp Burton: This is the middle period between the end of Summer and the start of Oscar season, so we get a couple of outside contenders for awards, but mostly genre fare that doesn’t attract me but might attract you.
