The Producers Guild of America have announced the nominations for the first of their three film categories. Documentary nominations were announced today, and the remaining categories will be announced January 3, 2013.

In looking at last year’s documentary list from the Producers Guild, it was clear that their influence over the Academy for documentaries was minimal. After all, these are producers making the nominations, not necessarily documentarians, who make up the Documentary branch at the Academy and do the actual voting there. Three of the titles on this list are likely to be on the shortlist for the Documentary Feature Oscar (The Island President, The Other Dream Team and Searching for Sugar Man). While those three titles are likely to carry over, none of these really seemed like the kinds of titles the PGA would recognize, though Sugar Man and Dream Team aren’t too far off the mark. Anyway, don’t expect too much correlation.
