There’s something almost self-destructive about adding categories to your awards like acting in comedy or action films and then adding a category for sci-fi. While it’s nice to recognize the different aspects of filmmaking, especially in light of the sequestration of the Best Picture category to mainly dramatic pictures, the organization risks looking like a critic-sized version of the Peoples Choice Awards or the MTV Movie Awards. Joking aside, there were no major embarrassments in their new categories, which is something of a relief. As to the main nominations, the broadness of the acting categories, pretty much covers all eventualities. And other than the likes of Helen Mirren missing out for Best Actress or Paul Thomas Anderson missing the Best Director slate, this is a fairly inclusive list, which is pretty much what we expected from this group as they tend to focus less on recognizing the best and more on being an Oscar precursor, a frustrating trend among many critics groups.
