I see a stream of young adult fiction writers entering the marketplace just hoping to be the next big thing.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Plot Summary: A half-angel, half-human woman is inducted into a secret order of protectors who keep the city safe from the dark powers the roil beneath its surface.
Release Date: August 23, 2013

Rating: A
Commentary: This is a beautiful, simple design with storytelling capabilities of its own. The mirror effect captures the film’s premise evocatively and with visual pizazz.
Rating: B-
Commentary: The young adult nature of the story feels a bit too disingenuous to be appealing. This is the latest attempt to appeal to the aging Twilight fanbase. If it’s half as good as The Hunger Games, it might be worth something. This may also prove whether my observation about Lily Collins that I made in my Mirror Mirror review holds true. Can she carry an extremely mainstream film with her dynamic charm?
