Robert Redford is political. We knew that, but his slate of recent releases hasn’t swayed us that he’s still a capable director.

The Company You Keep

Plot Summary: From IMDb: “A former Weather Underground activist goes on the run from a journalist who has discovered his identity.”
Release Date: April 5, 2013

Rating: C-
Commentary: Robert Redford might have once been able to sell a film on his presence alone, but those days are gone. And we already know that Shia LaBeouf’s selling power has been tarnished, so using these two to sell your film is probably a poor decision.
Rating: B-
Commentary: I’ll freely admit the subject matter looks interesting, but by the simple fact that they couldn’t even find a string of critics to add plaudits to their trailer suggests the film probably isn’t worth attending. A great Weather Underground film may be difficult to achieve.

Oscar Chances: On paper, it looks like an Oscar contender, but critics have torn it apart. Robert Redford isn’t the prominent director he used to be. After Lions for Lambs and The Conspirator, he couldn’t afford another failure this late in his career. Look for the film to be easily forgotten.
