This week’s final daily update brings you the second trailer for RED, and new trailers for Last Train Home, Lovely, Still, Kings of Pastry and a new poster for It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

RED, trailer #2

Plot Summary: Retired CIA operatives discover a plot to kill them to keep their secrets safe and rebel against their would-be assassins.
Release Date: October 15, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: I love that they changed it up entirely for the second trailer, but the first has a few good moments as well. This one makes the film seem less interesting and like it’s filled with somewhat lame cliches.

LAST TRAIN HOME

Plot Summary: A migrant family in China struggles to keep itself together and survive in a tough environment.
Release Date: September 3, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: The trailer doesn’t try to be too moribund or exciting, but depicts its images succinctly and honestly. Although it’s a bit dull, it could be an interesting doc.
Rating: C
Commentary: Too much dialogue. Most people won’t take the time to read more than a few lines, so it’s one of the chief negative aspects of the poster. The image selection, however, is plainly fascinating and completely fitting.

Oscar Chances: So many docs could contend this year and this could very well be one of them.

LOVELY, STILL

Plot Summary: Two aging singles find love again in each others arms.
Release Date: September 10, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: It should always worry you when a trailer spends the first tenth doing nothing but showing what festivals the film has played at. Certainly they are trying to suggest this is an important movie, but when you consider how many films show at festivals, it’s not as big of a deal anymore. Saw showed at Sundance if that gives you any idea. But that’s not really the point, the trailer focuses heavily on praise given to the performances which seem mostly directed toward Martin Landau, but that doesn’t give one hope of more than another Oscar baity vehicle in a rather bland film.
Rating: C
Commentary: Far too much blank space on the poster. It helps draw your eyes to the lower half of the poster, but it isn’t very appealing. There’s a lot of space to deal with and either you want people to think you’re going for minimal to support your film or you don’t have a lot to say so you try to keep it simple. This is one of those posters I think that may just be trying to keep it simple without having much to say.

Oscar Chances: There will probably be early talk of Landau for a nomination, but with people like Christopher Plummer, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Hal Holbrook each trying to parlay small indie work into Oscar nominations and failing, he probably shouldn’t get his hopes up.

KINGS OF PASTRY

Plot Summary: A documentary following a culinary competition to crown France’s best pastry chef.
Release Date: September 15, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: The music is a nice touch and some of the events suggest it might be mildly interesting, but overall the production feels like it lacks importance and to get people into the theater, you need to be about something.
Rating: C-
Commentary: Two guys sitting around eating. Either it’s going to make you hungry or make you think the film is just about eating.

Oscar Chances: Not this time, guys.

IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, poster #1

Plot Summary: Unable to understand his depression, a 16-year-old checks himself into a mental health clinic where he discovers friends and love amidst the patients.
Release Date: September 24, 2010

It’s Kind of a Funny Story
Rating: C-
Commentary: Bland is probably the best word to describe this. A bunch of actors standing in bathrobes isn’t a great selling tool, especially when they aren’t all that sexy or attractive (the clothes, not the people, but aside from Emma, the people aren’t either). I don’t even think Zach Galifianakis could sell it…he’s not really a box office draw.
