This week, we have a large number of new releases, each hoping to draw their demographic to the theater and become number one. There are also two limited release films opening this weekend. Wide: The Other Guys, Step Up 3D, Middle Men, Twelve; Limited: Flipped, Mao’s Last Dancer. Looks like we are short two contributors this week. I’ll update this as soon as I have their commentary. (UPDATE: 8/4/10, 12:55p – Added Wes’ thoughts)

Will Farell is quickly becoming the second coming of Adam Sandler, a physical comedian whose unnecessary antics annoy me. So, you can imagine how unlikely I am to go see this.

Thoughts

Another week, another dumb comedy.

Ugh… another Will Ferrell movie. I’ll pass, thank you.

If I see this, it will be on DVD since I have not seen the first two features. I like the cut of the trailer, which helps me think it might be better than I know it will be.

Thoughts

I got dizzy watching the trailer, and that was in 2-D!

It’s just another teen dance movie. I guess they think that the fact that it’s in 3D sets it apart from the rest, but Hollywood is wrong once again.

Thoughts

It’s interesting in a minor way, but certainly not the kind of film I rush right out to see.

Thoughts

This film was shown at Cannes in May, 2009 with no buzz and no rush to release it which probably means it’s not very good. The only film about the internet in this year’s Oscar race will be David Fincher’s The Social Network.

It could be interesting.

On the one hand, I like the premise. On the other hand, it’s Joel Schumacher. So, really unless it’s more Veronica Guerin/Flatliners than Batman & Robin/Phantom of the Opera, I won’t be seeing it.

Thoughts

Joel Schumacker is arguably the worst director of the last thirty-forty years. All of his films are torture to sit through. I have no expectations that this one would be any different.

It’s a Joel Schumacher movie, which is an automatic deal breaker for me.

I can’t really say that it looks uninteresting, but I also can’t imagine myself trying to catch it at the theater, so this may be a DVD/screener kind of film if at all.

Thoughts

Doesn’t sound like much, but Rob Reiner did wonders with kids in Stand By Me so it may be worth a look.

Thoughts

I’ve never even heard of this movie until now. But it’s a Rob Reiner movie, which means that it will likely be relatively harmless schmaltz.

I hate to be so indecisive, but this is another film that I could see being good, but could more likely see being bad. I can’t quite decide how to roll on this one.

Thoughts

Bruce Bereford’s relationship dramas (Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy) are always worth a look and this one looks to be his most promising film in some time. I don’t know what its Oscar chances really are, though, with Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan poised to be the most talked about ballet movie of the year.

Thoughts

Once again, another movie I’ve never heard of. After reading the synopsis, it doesn’t sound like anything I’d be interested in seeing.
