Tonight is a big update night again with five new trailers and two new posters. On the trailer front, we have French foreign language film Hideaway (La Refuge), Facebook founding drama The Social Network, twisted drug feature Enter the Void, alien invasion flick Skyline and romantic dramedy The Romantics. For new posters, we have them for Saw 3D and Due Date.
HIDEAWAY (LA REFUGE)
|
Plot Summary: After the tragic death of her boyfriend, a pregnant girl finds comfort in her hideaway and in another man who visits her. Release Date: September 10, 2010 |

Rating: B- Commentary: I’m not a fan of the song selection, but the image and dialogue selection makes it look like a compelling and interesting film. And since it’s from director Francois Ozon, I have little doubt that it won’t be. |
Rating: C Commentary: The poster does not do the trailer much justice. It’s your typical romantic drama poster with split segments, less-than-engaging images and poor color selection. |

THE SOCIAL NETWORK, trailer #3
|
Plot Summary: The story of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and the origins of one of the most utilized social service in the history of the world. Release Date: October 1, 2010 |

Rating: B- Commentary: The song they’ve chosen is a great touch with the accompanying photographs and I remember all that well from the second trailer. They added a lot of extra information to this third trailer, little of which makes the film seem more interesting. It may still be a good movie, but the more it’s advertised, the less likely I think people will want to see it. |

ENTER THE VOID
|
Plot Summary: Impossible to describe is probably the best way to summarize Gaspar Noe’s follow up to Irreversible. Release Date: September 24, 2010 |

Rating: B- Commentary: What a bizarre little trailer. Much like the thumping, chaotic music and club scenes depicted in the trailer, this film looks like a visceral ride of indescribable proportions. |
Rating: B Commentary: It’s a bit blurry in places, but it captures a good deal of the frenetic energy of the trailer. It might even draw a few curiosity seekers to the theater. |

SKYLINE
|
Plot Summary: After sending a message into deep space, earth is beset by an alien race bent on collecting them for their own nefarious purposes. Release Date: November 12, 2010 |

Rating: B- Commentary: It’s tantalizing enough to make you want more, but predictable enough to make you wonder why you would even think of seeing it. It may do sufficiently well for an alien invasion film, but I expect it to perform under Roland Emmerich’s 2012 territory. |
Rating: None Commentary: I don’t review placeholders. |

THE ROMANTICS
|
Plot Summary: On the eve of his wedding, an old flame gives him pause to go through with it. Release Date: September 10, 2010 |

Rating: C+ Commentary: Another all-star stunt cast in another will-they-or-won’t-they marriage dramedy. The trailer doesn’t really give me much hope in the quality of the film even with people like Candice Bergen, Elijah Wood and Anna Paquin in it. |
Rating: C- Commentary: What were they thinking? Apart from the well-chosen images, this poster is garish and blinding. The colors are abysmal, the font difficult to read and the layout is atrocious. |

SAW, poster #3

Rating: C+ Commentary: The latest 3D motion poster, check it out on the IMP Awards website, is a twist on the others, switching from white-themed to black-themed. It’s a nice change of pace and the image is more believable in 3D, but I still like the old fashion 2D posters. |

DUE DATE, poster

Plot Summary: Trying to get home for his child’s birth, a desperate father-to-be finds himself trapped in a disturbing road trip that threatens to destroy his sanity. Release Date: November 5, 2010 |

Previous Preview: Due Date |
Rating: C+ Commentary: A couple of minor sight gags (the bloody arm cast, the green-taped paw injury), but mostly it’s a straightforward poster exemplifying the relationship between these two characters. One a perpetually happy guy, the other a miserable, frustrated one. At least they go the actors to pose for it, but what good it will do, I’m not sure. |
