Three new trailers tonight: Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, The Fierlinger Brothers’ My Dog Tulip and Wes Craven’s My Soul to Take.

BLACK SWAN

Plot Summary: Struggling to become Prima Ballerina in the New York City Ballet Company, Nina must move beyond the role of White Swan in Swan Lake and learn how to embrace her Black Swan without being consumed by it.
Release Date: December 1, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: A
Commentary: It’s the strongest trailer I’ve seen in some time. You are instantly hooked and positive that this will be unlike anything you’ve seen before. The cast is strangely enticing and the premise downright engaging.
Rating: B
Commentary: A bit too sparse, and the image barely looks like Natalie Portman, but the look does seem to fit with the theme of the film. I almost wonder if we might expect a poster featuring the Black Swan as well.

Oscar Chances: It may be a bit too twisted for Academy tastes, but with talent like Natalie Portman, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder, it could still contend in the acting categories. Even Mila Kunis doesn’t look as awful as she has in the past and could be a surprise Supporting Actress nominee.

MY DOG TULIP

Plot Summary: A lonely, elderly gentleman finds companionship in a young, joyful German Shepherd.
Release Date: September 1, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: It’s not a bad trailer, though a bit esoteric for most audiences. Matter of fact, that the film not only feels like an intellectual one but also features more crude, hand-drawn animation than modern animated features, it’s very unlikely to find an audience.
Rating: C
Commentary: The font is poorly chosen, but the image is appropriate. It certainly won’t mislead the viewer into thinking they are getting another type of animated film, which should help keep business to the target market.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: It will be on the long list of eligible films but is very unlikely to be able to compete with the big boys and the foreign contenders.

MY SOUL TO TAKE

Plot Summary: Seventeen years after a serial killer was murdered, one of seven teenagers may house his soul and be seeking revenge against all those born the same night he was killed.
Release Date: October 8, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: The trailer is very much your generic teen slasher flick and if it weren’t for Wes Craven’s name, I don’t think it would have had any impact on viewers. However, generic as it may look, Craven has been known to create some inventive work and since A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my all-time favorite features, I’ll definitely consider giving it a try.
Rating: None
Commentary: None available.
