Alongside Oscar contender Fair Game, we also have trailers for two horror films (Case 39 and Hatchet II) and an inspirational film (Like Dandelion Dust). In addition, we have a new poster for It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

FAIR GAME

Plot Summary: Based on the true story of the revelation of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame’s identity to the press in retaliation for her husband’s revelation of malfeasance at the White House.
Release Date: November 5, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: The music is atrocious, but the presentation works quite well. You’re immediately pulled into the story and intrigued to see where it’s going. Naomi Watts and Sean Penn should make for a fairly decent flick.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

Oscar Chances: Although it has had very little buzz after its festival runs earlier this year, Hollywood loves these kinds of movies if they can also be financially successful. Naomi Watts and Sean Penn should both be considered in the hunt for Oscar nominations and the film itself could be up for a few itself.

CASE 39

Plot Summary: A child services caseworker takes a girl out of her murderous parents’ home to discover that dark forces are pursuing her and will not let anything or anyone stand in their way.
Release Date: October 1, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: It has elements of many other horror films, but it still feels a bit original. The design and execution of the trailer are well thought out and should do well in attracting customers.
Rating: C+
Commentary: A bit too sparse, the poster still manages to work in spite of itself.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

LIKE DANDELION DUST

Plot Summary: An ex-con discovers that his wife was pregnant when he went into prison and gave the child up for adoption. Now he wants to have his son back.
Release Date: September 24, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C
Commentary: It looks like of those bargain bin family films that tackle superficial issues and end up with the right thing being done in the end. And this is the kind of trailer that stymies me. How can one two-and-a-half-minute trailer feel so much longer than another. This one feels overly lengthy.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.
Trailer Link: Yahoo Movies Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

HATCHET II

Plot Summary: A sequel to 2006 slasher flick about a hatchet-wielding psycho in the Louisiana swamps.
Release Date: October 1, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: The jittery font doesn’t make for a pleasing visual experience, not enough of the film is seen and the “critic” notices have no annotation indicating who said them, which suggests smaller, unknown critics or genre specialists. And since this low budget horror film didn’t even make back its money at the box office, I’m a bit surprised there’s a sequel, but not surprised they are playing down that information claiming it was actually popular.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

Oscar Chances: None.

IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, poster #2

Plot Summary: Unable to understand his depression, a 16-year-old checks himself into a mental health clinic where he discovers friends and love amidst the patients.
Release Date: September 24, 2010

Poster

Previous Preview:
It’s Kind of a Funny Story
Rating: C
Commentary: Slightly better than the first poster, but the colors are more washed out and generic than the original, which isn’t saying a lot since the original while slightly more colorful was significantly more bland.
