The Academy has announced twenty animated features in the competition for Best Animated Feature. If at least sixteen of the twenty films complete their qualifying openings per Academy Rules, the maximum number of nominees in the category will be five (the Academy doesn’t have to nominate all five slots, but it typically does).

You can quickly remove a number of the films on this list from consideration (Hero of Color City, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, and Planes 2) based on their abysmal performance with film critics. Of these, there are three that are pretty much guaranteed nominations, Big Hero 6, How to Trian Your Dragon 2 and The Lego Movie. The remaining two competitors could be any of the remaining films.
