For Oscar fans, There are three months of the year that have significance to them more than any other. In December, January and February, various organizations and guilds give out awards in anticipation of the biggest award of them all, the Academy Awards. It may seem hard to believe, but Oscar season officially begins with the Spirit Awards Nominations, which are coming out next Tuesday (November 24, 2015).
With the season about to kick into high gear, the contributors here at Cinema Sight have put together one last predictions list before the onslaught begins. After the jump, you’ll find our current predictions in nine categories (Picture, Animated Feature, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay). While there are still plenty more categories, these are typically the ones that start to coalesce as we head into awards seasons as few other categories are targeted by critics groups.
In our latest update, Room has gone from an unlikely contender to a major one. This is how quickly Oscar season can make a sudden turn. While a movie like Room can pick up steam after a strong festival run, so too can films that release late in the year begin to falter as they are seen. Suffragette took the biggest fall from our last prediction set to this one while Brooklyn and Spotlight have seemingly burst onto the scene.
There are still several unknown quantities below (The Hateful Eight, Joy and The Revenant), but things are slowly starting to solidify around certain contenders. Now, have a look at what we’ve got to say.
