In a very uncharacteristic move, the Screen Actors Guild has gone so far away from the current Oscar narrative that either they will redefine the competition or they’ll be thought entirely irrelevant. Harvey Weinstein’s influence is clear with both the Woman in Gold nomination and the category fraud of Rooney Mara. Trumbo did surprisingly well, but when you consider its connection to Old Hollywood, it isn’t as shocking. Beasts of No Nation did better than expected.

The big surprise was Straight Outta Compton managing a Best Cast nomination when it had been largely forgotten in most circles. The fact that this list skews towards earlier releases and later ones, like The Revenant, Carol and The Hateful Eight were largely ignored (save DiCaprio who would have gotten in had he been seen or not), it’s clear that the early deadlines are severely hurting the conversation. Either that or studios need to stop waiting until the last minute to release and screen everything.

[EDIT: 10:44am] Added the stunt ensemble nominations, which don’t feature any major surprises and are likely to result in Mad Max: Fury Road earning an award from SAG.
