Eleven films crowd this weekend’s box office, but only three are going wide: Life As We Know It, My Soul to Take and Secretariat. The limited releases are As Good As Dead, I Spit on Your Grave, Inside Job, It’s a Wonderful Afterlife, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Nowhere Boy, Stone and Tamara Drewe. Please note that the Consensus and Wes’ comments will be available later.

Although the trailer features some amusing moments, most of what I’ve heard is that it’s rote romantic comedy. Not interested.

Thoughts

Yep, another week, another dumbed down romantic comedy.

Thoughts

Two leads I find completely unappealing can’t overcome a weak looking script.

Anytime Wes Craven conceives of a horror film, I’ll give it a shot, but something about this one seems a bit old hat. Perhaps the teen slasher genre has run out of ideas.

Thoughts

I’m not in the mood for another film about another serial killer.

Thoughts

You can’t overlook the new Wes Craven film, but this doesn’t look like one of his better films.

It’s Disney’s populist entertainment for the year and thereby sounds like a perfect Oscar candidate. I am not that interested in seeing it, and like Seabiscuit, I might not ever pick it up.

Thoughts

If the Academy could nominate the snoozefest that was Seabiscuit they should fall all over themselves to find room for this more contemporary, more exciting and supposedly more excitingly-filmed horse saga.

Thoughts

This film looks dreadfully uplifting.

While I kind of like Cary Elwes in horror mode, the movie doesn’t appeal much to me.

Thoughts

Was not on the list available for Peter to review before his vacation, so his data her is intentionally left blank.

Thoughts

A likable, if washed-up, cast in a washed-up movie.

A revenge horror flick for women. It was a tough sell for the original and it will be a tough sell for this remake.

I don’t watch a lot of documentaries and this one doesn’t seem like the kind to pull me out of that trend.

Thoughts

Disquieting documentary about the current economic crisis is generating major awards buzz. It doesn’t hurt that Matt Damon narrates.

Thoughts

A timely documentary that looks intriguing.

Indian-centric comedies just don’t appeal to me and this one looks more outlandish than most.

Thoughts

I’m not in the mood for a comedy about a serial killer.

Thoughts

Painfully unfunny.

With a title like this, you have to expect those who don’t like the film to say “no, it’s not” and that seems to be a lot of what I’m hearing about it. Add that to the fact that I can’t stand Galifianakis, and you have a no-go for me.

Thoughts

This film about a suicidal teenager could be another gem from the writing/directing team behind Half Neslon and Sugar, two of the best independent films of recent years.

Thoughts

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have made two phenomenal films, and this looks like it could have the making of a third.

I am not a fan of The Beatles, but this doesn’t look too uninteresting. Oscar could recognize it for a couple of minor tech categories, but its chances dwindle as the year presses on.

Thoughts

This film about John Lennon’s early life was a critical favorite when released in England last year. Will it have the same appeal on this side of the pond a year later? Time will tell.

Thoughts

The word from the festivals hasn’t been nice, which is bad because it has a great story.

This looks like another Oscar baity The Life of David Gale kind of flick and will likely be shunned for the same reasons.

Thoughts

It’s a rather blah title, but the new film from the director and star of The Painted Veil could be a winner.

Thoughts

A great cast in a film that doesn’t look anywhere near their talents.

I do think it looks amusing and with the added bonus of Stephen Frears, it might be worth my time.

Thoughts

Stephen Frears has gone downhill since The Queen, but he’s still Stephen Frears, so maybe this will be better than it looks.

Thoughts

Stephen Frears has an eye for interesting material, and this could have a lot of potential.
