Disney’s box office dominance will continue with a surefire number one debut for its live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. While Barbershop: The Next Cut will likely be successful, it won’t have any chance of topping Jungle Book. Criminal will be lucky to breathe the same air as these two films.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t been interested in the prior films, but this looks compellingly topical.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sequel to the formulaic trilogy of 11-14 years ago looks tired.
Tripp Burton (TB): I haven’t seen any of the Barbershop films, but if you have enjoyed them, this should offer more of the same humor.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having not seen the first two Barbershop movies, I have little interest in seeing this. The trailer veers from comedy to serious let’s take back our neighborhood. I am not sure what it is trying for.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An original story that doesn’t look very original doesn’t hold much promise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Crime drama with a strong cast could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very pedestrian.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like a total misfire. Decent cast, but skippable.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Even though the trailer doesn’t really inspire me, I’ve heard great things about it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast should make this umpteenth version of The Jungle Book worth seeking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting reimagining of the Disney classic, and the kids in my household are very excited!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I was not really looking forward to this, but the early reviews are glowing, so maybe it was worth remaking.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Unfortunately, it just doesn’t look that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl in the midst of the 1973 Chilean military coup could prove interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): An interesting looking political thriller, although I’ll catch it On Demand.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Emma Watson is always worth watching, but this film looks fairly incomprehensible and the early reviews are not terribly kind.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be cheesy, but it also looks vaguely interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Korean superstar stalked by his look-alike fan doesn’t quite float my boat.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very dull and paint-by-numbers.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An obsessive fan will do anything to meet his idol. This has been done before and it looks like it was done better then too.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer just doesn’t have what it takes to make this look good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Horror thriller looks tedious.
Tripp Burton (TB): Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin was an intense little thriller, and this looks to amp it up even more.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are pretty good, but the gory trailer leaves me cold. Patrick Stewart notwithstanding, I will pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I never saw its anthology predecessors, so I’m ambivalent towards this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Brazilian compilation of shorts was a flop in its home country. I expect it will perform just as poorly in the U.S.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not sure if I need another one of these city anthologies, but the lineup of filmmakers is very impressive here.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This collection of vignettes looks more like a travel poser for Rio than an actual film.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): 1980s-set musical from the director of Once and Begin Again could be a sleeper hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): Another interesting looking John Carney musical.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A cute if slight coming of age story might be worth seeing.
