A smaller release load this week with two new wide openers and five limited. Wide: Jackass 3D, RED; Limited: Carlos, Carmo, Hit the Road, Conviction, Down Terrace and Hereafter.
Consensus
Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.
RED: With only one person on the fence, we seem to be interested (75%) but we’re mostly certain Oscar won’t be interested (75%).
Jackass 3D: We aren’t planning to catch it (75%) and no one would be dumb enough to give this an Oscar (100%).
Hereafter: We’re going to see it (100%), we’re just split whether to see it at the theater or on DVD. And we all seem to agree it’s a minor contender (75%).
Conviction: We are mostly certain to be watching it (75%) and again split on whether it will be an Oscar contender (75%).
Carlos: It’s a movie to be seen (100%), but three-quarters say to see it on DVD; Oscar contention is a split verdict (50%).
Carmo, Hit the Road: We’re either undecided or won’t see it (50%) and Oscar won’t be taking it on the road (100%).
Down Terrace: We are more solidly against watching the film than any other this week (100%) and we’re also unified against its Oscar possibilities (100%).

ThoughtsI can’t help it. Helen Mirren alone makes this a must see for me. She looks like she’s having a hell of a time and that’s really all that matters for something like this. |
ThoughtsLooks like Die Hard lite. |
ThoughtsGreat cast in what looks like a slight action film. |
ThoughtsI actually have no personal interest in seeing this, but my girlfriend wants to see it pretty badly, so I’m sure we’ll end up seeing it at some point. |

ThoughtsNever saw the first two. Never watched the show. Never have any intention. |
ThoughtsYou know what to expect. |
ThoughtsJackass is mindless and childish, yet I’ve laughed convulsively through the first two. |
ThoughtsI saw the first movie on MTV a couple of years ago, and that was enough for me. The TV show was amusing enough for what it was, but the movies are pretty pointless. |

ThoughtsIt’s not getting as much attention as past Eastwood efforts, but never count him out. The film itself doesn’t look too bad at all and may well appeal to broader audiences the way Clint doesn’t always. |
ThoughtsClint Eastwood’s latest directorial effort is getting mixed reviews. No one gets a home run every time at bat. |
ThoughtsThe reviews have been really weak, but I trust Eastwood enough to at least check it out. |
ThoughtsIt could’ve been a major contender, but it has been getting lukewarm reception and won’t factor into the major categories. It’s best chances at scoring Oscar nominations now rest in the tech categories. I’ll check it out on DVD, but only because I’m a huge fan of Clint Eastwood’s work. |

ThoughtsI’ve been reading good news about it, but that trailer makes it look as cheesy and insipid as anything you could imagine. |
ThoughtsSam Rockwell is getting Oscar buzz for his portrayal of a wrongfully convicted man whose sister, two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank becomes a lawyer to help him. |
ThoughtsAgain, quite a great cast for such a weak looking film. |
ThoughtsIt could be up for a couple of acting prizes, particularly Sam Rockwell. |

ThoughtsIt doesn’t look too bad and watching this alongside Mesrine might be an interesting all-crime, foreign-language evening. |
ThoughtsTrue story of a terrorist, this was originally a three part mini-series on European TV. Which version will be released on DVD? |
ThoughtsAssayas is a great director (who made my favorite film of last year, Summer Hours), and this is a fascinating story. |
ThoughtsIt has an interesting enough premise, so it might be a renter. It could be a contender for Best Foreign Language Film. |

ThoughtsIt doesn’t look terrible, but it doesn’t look outstanding. A lot depends on how well received it ends up being. |
ThoughtsA handicapped guy and a beautiful girl turn to crime. Looks dull. |
ThoughtsCould be interesting, could be derivative. |
ThoughtsIt sounds boring. I won’t be checking it out. |

ThoughtsPandering. Pedantic. Predictable. Not particularly partial to such pablum. |
ThoughtsBritish comedy looks strained. |
ThoughtsLooks like many other Guy Ritchie knockoffs that have bored me half to death. |
ThoughtsIt looks like a million other movies and probably isn’t as well done as the majority of them. |
