  • Halle Berry’s film Frankie and Alex, which garnered some strong reviews for the Oscar Winner at Cannes, will have an Oscar qualifying run this December, it was just announced. This is seemingly to try and get the actress a second Oscar nomination.
  • Jean-Luc Godard will not come to Los Angeles on November 13 to collect his Honorary Oscar.
  • Alexandre Desplat has been awarded the Composer of the Year Award from the World Soundtrack Awards. Among Desplat’s eligible scores this year are The King’s Speech and The Ghost Writer.
  • Animal Kingdom led the nominations for the Australian Film Institute Awards with 18 nominations, including a Best Actress nomination for Jacki Weaver. A Supporting Actress campaign is going for Weaver.
  • The Los Angeles Film Critics announced that their Career Achievement Award will go to Oscar nominee Paul Mazursky. The award will be presented at their annual awards ceremony on January 15.
  • James Cameron announced this week that he will make 2 sequels to his Best Picture nominee Avatar.

Review Round-Up

Yet again, no Oscar contenders were released this week.

Oscar Box Office

  • The Social Network crossed the $75 million mark, and looks strong to make it to $100 million.
  • Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter went into wide-release and debuted in a weak fourth place.
  • Documentary blockbuster Waiting for “Superman” broke past the $4 million mark, and ended up in 13th place overall.

New Trailers

  • I Love You Philip Morris: This one-time possible contender looks like it will no longer be in the running.
  • Rabbit Hole: This is quickly becoming a strong contender in many major categories, and the trailer shows why.
  • Son of Babylon: Iraq’s foreign language submission looks like it could be a strong dark horse candidate.

Oscar Farewell

  • Oscar Winner Lisa Blount (pictured at right), who produced 2001 Short Film winner The Accountant with husband Roy McKinnon, passed away at the age of 53. Blount also appeared in An Officer and a Gentleman, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.
  • Joseph Stein, the Tony Award-winning playwright, passed away at 98. He was best known for the script to Fiddler on the Roof, which was turned into a Best Picture nominee in 1971.
