The Hurt Locker could benefit from a lesser number of votes required to win. With 10 nominees, voters could very easily hand the award to a lesser-seen film. Plus, with so many precursors backing the film, The Hurt Locker is very much in the hunt. I’m still picking Up in the Air to win at the moment, but anything can happen between now and then, but we’ll have to wait until the PGA to really know who’s in this to win.
Also, don’t count out The Hurt Locker simply because it hasn’t been seen as widely as other films. I don’t think The Academy cares too much about that as a metric for whether a film will win Best Picture or not.
Well, it looks like Waltz and Mo’Nique are dominating the Supporting categories this year, making for little excitement there except to see who will or won’t be nominated alongside them. I’m rooting for Diane Kruger to make a surprise appearance on the Oscar list as she did on the SAG list.
Is Meryl a sure thing for the Oscar? Seems that way, though I’m starting to think that Sandra Bullock could very well give her some strong competition.
I have a hard time seeing the Academy give Best Picture to The Hurt Locker (not widely seen) or Nine (many reviews are not kind); right now I’m guessing Up in the Air will take the prize and if Jason Reitman doesn’t win Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow will.
