After the solid, but unexceptional opening for Despicable Me 3, the third iteration of Spider-Man on the big screen since 2002 should handily win the weekend. With the added star wattage of Robert Downey, Jr., the film may top the $100 million mark. Despicable could have a soft second-weekend drop thanks to it being a children’s film at a time with few, but it’s $72 million just isn’t going to translate into a very big second weekend.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first Spider-Man films were one-third great, one-third OK, and one-third awful. The second series was one-half great, one-half bad. This one looks one-half mediocre and one-half unnecessary. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hopefully, this latest incarnation of Spider-man will be better than the last with multi-talented Tom Holland at its center. Tripp Burton (TB): I’m getting superhero fatigue very strongly, but this looks fun enough to make me check it out. Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like an entertaining reboot of the series, even though I’m not sure we needed another reboot.

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s got a solid cast and creative backbone, but it doesn’t look nearly as interesting as it should. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like 1990’s Ghost without the laughs, but more inviting than 1981’s dismal Ghost Story, so who knows. Tripp Burton (TB): The word from Sundance was so good for this that it is one of my most anticipated films of the summer. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are fairly good, but the trailer sure doesn’t spark any interest in me.
