Review: (#1, C+) While the colors are nice, the lack of background detail, the difficulty of discerning the figure’s face and the indistinctness of the tattoo conspire to make this a rather dull effort.

(#2, A-) Employing seldom used colors with a nice balance of character images and colorful affectations, this design stands out in a sea of similar designs. Being visually striking won’t bring interest to the film but it will bring interest to the poster itself. (#3-#14, B-) These character posters, while using nice, intense shades of pink and purple, are largely devoid of richness in detail. The background may change between posters but it remains the same dull fogginess between each. It’s nice to see more of each character but nothing sets them apart from the cohesion of the designs. (#15, C) Taking the worst part of the character posters and adding just a static character shot make for a rather uninspired effort. (#16, B-) standing out from the other designs, this yellow-orange-blue design is certainly striking with some interesting background details even if it is a bit too static. (#17 & #19, C+) These designs are neither bland nor terribly exciting. They just seem to sit there doing little. (#18 & #20, B-) Interesting to look at, each is a distinct entity of its own. The first is a fascinating art piece while the second is nicely balanced but employing a hideous color combination. (#21-#23, C) These format-specific designs lack excitement or intrigue even when they show action elements. They feel rather tepid in terms of their creative energies.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B- / C+

Review: (#1, C+) The characteristic appeal of the John Wicks films comes through well in the trailer but it still feels like a generic effort that doesn’t do enough to distinguish itself from other films in the franchise.

(#2, B-) Pulling in Keanu Reeves to tie the film into the John Wick universe is a bold choice, especially when he’ll be butting heads against our protagonist. It’s a bold choice that makes the viewer wonder whose film this actually is. That might not be a good thought to put in their heads. However, there’s just enough style and the presence of Anjelica Huston that it should have some measure of appeal.

(#3, C+) Fans of the John Wick films were probably already invested before this trailer but it justifies their interest. The narrative isn’t well presented but the action elements are well focused and that alone should give the fans what they are clamoring for.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
