Review: (#1, C) Maybe once you’ve seen the film, this design will make sense but that’s a huge “if” and it won’t be sold on this design alone.

(#2, C+) Unsurprisingly, this is incredibly odd, which fits the Yorgos Lanthimos aesthetic. There is too much unused space and while it has symbolic elements, those elements don’t entice. (#3, C) Another design filled with symbolism but lacking in detail. While the use of colors is an improvement, it lacks impact.

Trailer Rating: B- / B / C+

Review: (#1, B-) Reminiscent of early Coen Bros. films, this home-invasion seriocomedy from Yorgos Lanthimos has some very interesting moments but also feels less compelling than it should.

(#2, B) The first trailer felt quite mainstream but this second one allows Lanthimos’ style flow through, giving the audience a sense of the outright crazy narrative and dramatic tension the film is going to provide. That should engage the interest of most Lanthimos fans along with perhaps a few others who might be curious as it its insanity.

(#3, C+) While playing this like it’s a scene from the film might work for an unfamiliar audience but does it really create the cross-demographic appeal that the studio wants? Those who are familiar with Yorgos Lanthimos will already have been enticed by the prior two trailers. Getting the unfamiliar involved isn’t served well by this trick but perhaps there’s no easy way to make that appeal. That said, there are those uninitiated to Lanthimos for whom this isn’t going to bring those viewers in.

Oscar Prospects:

While Yorgos Lanthimos does miss quite often, after his success with Poor Things, he’s a much more solid Oscar contender. This looks like it could be the only one of his two films this year that the Academy will consider.
