Review: (#1, C) A mediocrity. Lifeless background, uninspired foreground. The titling is a bit too indistinct and while it might create interest in fans of Jamie Lee Curtis, that won’t be enough to sustain it.
(#2, C) An empty white background is pointless. A woman balancing while reaching for her shoe creates energy but no depth. It’s unclear what the point of or effect of such a minimal design can have.
(#3, C+) An improvement over the prior with more details in the image to break up that horrendous white backdrop but ultimately, it doesn’t say too much of importance about the film and certainly creates no interest in it.
Trailer Rating: B+ / B-

Review: (#1, B+) It’s been a long time since James L. Brooks presented a film that looked this genuinely amusing. With a strong cast and some wry humor, the trailer presents a compelling narrative that might generate some decent business from a curious audience. It doesn’t quite have enough big names to sell it based on that alone but fans of films like Terms of Endearment might have some hope that Brooks was back at the top of his game.
(#2, B-) Leaning on some of the mechanics of the first trailer and infusing it with more moments from the film doesn’t add the level of detail and engagement audiences are going to expect from a James L. Brooks comedy. While it will remind some of his greater 1980s output, it’s not likely to sell them on this being a return to form rather than a derivation of his past work.
Oscar Prospects:
A new James L. Brooks film? It has to be considered a contender until the reviews come in.
