Review: (#1, C) For F1 racing fans, this is going to have a certain appeal. For anyone else, it may have none, especially without star Brad Pitt’s full face.

(#2, C+) The target demo of this film isn’t really the one this poster is aiming for. Putting a buff Brad Pitt on the cover will appeal to women but many of them aren’t particularly interested in F1 racing. The racecar is too small to appeal to the ones who are more likely to give the film a go.

(#3, C) For fans of cars only and even they probably won’t be excited by this minimal effort. (#4, B+) While the background is a bit lazy, there are enough tilted affectations to make it feel energetic and exciting. The cutouts are well arranged and the actors are each given suitable appearance in the design. It will easily stand out in a crowded marketplace. (#5-#7, C) These format designs have an array of differing styles but all seem to come down to some lazy element. The first has that oppressive white background, the second has the milquetoast shot from the film as a backdrop, and the third barely has much of a background, certainly not one the audience will be enticed to look at.

(#8, C) The black-and-white mixed with the pale gold is an interesting aesthetic but the empty space overwhelms much of the central design. (#9, C+), Keeping up the black-white-gold palette while finishing the lower fifth of the design with color imbalances the effort with neither appearing very striking. (#10, B) The black-white-gold palette is used sparingly to much greater effect than previously. With the muted tons allowing the skin colors to pop out, the effect is intriguing. Further, the balance of the images is well arranged. (#11, C) There isn’t much new to this design, the motion blur overwhelms with the central image not blurring at all, making it all feel inauthentic.

Trailer Rating: C / B / C+

Review: (#1, C) How do you make a racing drama seem dull and listless, make a trailer like this. The world of F1 racing is fast-paced and exciting but you wouldn’t be able to tell that from this lumbering trailer that presents the story but generates little interest.

(#2, B) A surprisingly engaging trailer that perhaps gives away too much of the film’s premise but will definitely appeal to fans of Formula 1 racing. It might even attract a few eyes that might not otherwise be interested if it weren’t for the charm of star Brad Pitt.

(#3, C+) A chaotic trailer that might appeal to fans of F1 racing but the storyline is all over the place and the stakes aren’t nearly as interesting as they should be. There’s a presentation problem here that doesn’t quite make the film seem necessary.

Oscar Prospects:

It could be a nominee for Best Sound or less likely Best Film Editing but that’s about it.
