Review: (#1, C) An empty room, littered with leaves and feeling very rundown. It fits the setting and exemplifies the art direction but does little to excite. (#2, C) A film still meant to feel worlds apart from the prior design to highlight the far-reaching narrative setting but it doesn’t feel very enticing. (#3, C+) Having the feel of a period artwork, this design gives a better impression of the film’s general quality of production and its creative energy. It’s still lacking any rich complexity but it’s the best they’ve got so far.

(#4-#8, C) A series of character posters, all using the same monogram doesn’t create much sense of energy. Had there been enough characters to feature each letter of the title in a sequential set, it might have been more compelling. (#9, C) Poorly constructed, this design might feature the two primary characters, Frankenstein and his monster, but apart from the Victorian green at least creates a nice contrast in the background. (#10, B) Taking inspiration from its gothic feel, this design blends black-and-sickly green in an evocative manner but the space feels wasted in parts and the Victorian styling simply doesn’t quite stand out. (#11-#12, C) The thematic refinement of these designs is overly simplified and while they position two lovers and a central figure in differing states of rapture might fit the dramatic elements of the film, it doesn’t play out well when unsupported by creativity.

Trailer Rating: B- / B / C+

Review: (#1, B-) There’s not enough on display here to make a decision on whether the film will be good but it absolutely will be beautiful. The stunning designs shine through and that’s Guillermo del Toro’s bread and butter. A modern take on a horror classic that might actually be a nice new spin on the tale.

(#2, B) Giving the audience the sumptuous details and the atmosphere will do a lot to entice viewers to the theater. Although there’s little of the narrative explained in the trailer, those familiar with the story will at least build some expectations about it. Then, knowing it’s Guillermo del Toro, the refined and gorgeous details are most definitely going to appeal.

(#3, C+) After the prior trailer, it seemed like a follow up was unnecessary and that’s borne out by this underwhelming, dull trailer. It has a lot of energy in some scenes but the story is barely comprehendible and the stakes are underwhelming making it difficult to find a reason to see this film.

Oscar Prospects:

Guillermo del Toro’s films are now guaranteed Oscar contenders.
