Review: (#1, C+) There’s a simplistic beauty to the landscape and the silhouettes but there’s not enough here to engage the viewer for very long or to generate interest outside the most devoted fans of the animated films and series.

(#2, C) If you’re interested in seeing backdrops with minimal detail, this design should work for you. In terms of creative energy is bottom-barrel.

(#3-#9, B-) This series of character posters are pretty to look at with distinct poses and color schemes along with unique backgrounds. They are simplistic in how little detail they provide but a step above most recent such designs. (#10-#16, C+) None of these format-related designs provide any uniqueness of vision or compulsory elements. They simply feel like derivations of prior efforts. There is one non-format design thrown in but even then it’s not distinctive enough to set it apart from the rest of them.

(#17, C) Nothing much new here. a Generic design with epic but underwhelming lettering.

Trailer Rating: C- / C- / C / C+

Review: (#1, C-) One of the worst things you can do as a live-action adaptation of an animated film is copy scenes directly from the original. They have an opportunity to expand on what came in the first film but waste that time trying to remind you of the original. The Lion King did the same but did so with a 25-year gap. This one is releasing 15 years later with two films and a series in between so there is no nostalgia built up in its foundation. Pair that with a tepid trailer like this that lacks excitement and looks more like a parody than a genuine feature and you have a recipe for disaster.

(#2, C-) There isn’t enough different from the first trailer to the second and none of the overcomes the fact that it feels excessively familiar and like a poor attempt to cash in on a popular franchise.

(#3, C) This is the first trailer that hasn’t felt like a carbon copy of the original film. The performances are even more laughably bad in this one and the humor and heart are neither particularly engaging.

(#4, C+) This is one of the few trailers for this film that doesn’t look like a copy of the original. There isn’t enough here to appeal to anyone unfamiliar with the original films and those who are might only be interested in seeing this simulacrum in live-action but without the expectation of it being better.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
