Review: (#1, C) A dull edifice for a magical palace of some kind. The oranges and yellows contrast poorly with the greens and blues of the upper third. The dwarfed figures in the foreground are ultimately forgettable.

(#2, C+) Color-wise, it’s diametrically opposed to the prior more somber effort. It draws the attention and might tie into the film but it feels vacant and underutilized. With the white title on a too bright background makes it hard to read.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B

Review: (#1, C+) Whoever makes trailer for Netflix needs to be replaced. There should be something far more interesting at play in their animated films but the trailers almost never convey that. Most of them look amateurish and mediocre when the ultimate film is a little more intriguing. That said, it’s hard to parse from this lackluster trailer whether or not the movie will be any good. It doesn’t look it.

(#2, B) The first trailer made this film feel like a throwaway kids movie but this second trailer, while featuring several hilarious bits, makes the film look metaphorical, creative, and mature enough for adults to appreciate. Not quite the Pixar of old but it gives off the same vibes.

Oscar Prospects:

Netflix’s animated films often score Best Animated Feature nominations. That said, this looks a bit too immature for the Academy’s tastes. We’ll have to see what critics think first.
