Review: (#1, C+) The usual purpose of featuring actor photos inset into your design is to entice fans of those characters or to highlight the main characters. This poster throws in far too many figures although the top set of five individuals are given more space in decreasing sizes. It’s an interesting effect but ultimately the design is simplistic and underwhelming with the upper design not giving enough to interest the viewer. (#2, C) The shock of red is an interesting touch for a film that’s not a horror film but it doesn’t really give the viewer a sense of what the picture is about nor create the interest in them to find out.
(#3, C-) This IMAX design serves little purpose and is so empty that most viewers aren’t going to be impressed or intrigued.
(#4, C+) For those who are familiar with kabuki, this design will immediately connect them to the film’s premise but it’s not likely to generate appeal from those who don’t quite understand.
Trailer Rating: B / B+

Review: (#1, B) The trailer’s editing is familiar and unimpressive but the narrative comes through well enough to generate some interest but most of the intrigue is reserved for the gorgeous costuming and other design work. International Feature Oscar completists will be drawn without that but those who aren’t might find interest in its traditionalist-vs-modernist take on the premise.
(#2, B+) An improvement in every way, the audience finally understands what the film is about and although its appeal is extremely limited, those who might find some kind of interest in this film about breaking out of established roles might generate some wider appeal.
Oscar Prospects:
It’s Japan’s submission for the International Feature Oscar so it cannot be ignored as a potential nominee. Considering the beauty presented in the trailer, it’s could well end up on the shortlist, though a final nomination I don’t think will be in the cards.
