Review: (#1, C) Few colors makes Chalamet’s character stand out but only slightly. It’s overbearing and unappealing, which might just explain how the audience will feel about him in the trailer.

(#2, C) Were the designers hoping to trade on Chalamet’s physique to sell tickets? There’s little about this design that screams enthralling or compelling.

Trailer Rating: C+ / C+ / C

Review: (#1, C+) The difficulty of a story like this is making an unlikeable character appealing. In Chalamet’s hands, the Marty figure is brash and self-centered, giving the audience little onto which to hold. It’s a premise that doesn’t seem nearly as interesting as it should with Chalamet failing to sell it to his own fans.

(#2, C+) A chaotic biopic looking for a compelling theme or storyline to sell the audience on. Chalamet’s character is assertive and domineering, making it hard to take him as a sympathetic figure. It almost plays too well into the personality he displayed when egotistically proclaiming that he would one day be the next Marlon Brando. There’s nothing much about this trailer that suggests a film that audiences will be intrigued to see.

(#3, C) Hitting the viewer hard with the sound quality, this trailer jumps all over the narrative without settling on something that should make the viewer intrigued unless they are already a fan of Chalamet.

Oscar Prospects:

Is this the Oscar breakthrough for Josh Safdie? Possibly, though it doesn’t look quite like the movie the Academy likes to recognize.
