Review: (#1, C+) I’ll give them credit for having 16 figures in the background, stacking down into the 17th iteration. The problem is that it’s the only saving grace of the design which uses colors that are striking and work surprisingly well together but also seem a bit harsh when put against the more washed out central figure.
(#2, C+) The effort to feature 16 silhouettes of Mickey in the prior design was appreciated. It’s too bad they couldn’t have kept that conceit up in this second effort. There aren’t enough and that is unfortunate, even if we get to see more of the cast in this one.
(#3-#7 & #14-#17, C+) This series of character posters depict the various pre-death moments of our protagonist Mickey. They could have been a little more compelling in terms of titling but they are amusing nonetheless. (#8, D) A single-color background and bulky titling make this design a glaring mediocrity. (#9, C) More of the cross-eyed figures with a fresh dullard look feels incredibly cheap. (#10, C) A poorly thought out blue-red concept doesn’t fit the titling very well and makes this dull foreign design unappealing. (#11, C+) Taking those individual character posters and putting them behind the familiar protagonist is an interesting effect, though it’s too bad four of them are blocked, it could have been somewhat successful if it didn’t have that deer-in-a-headlight figure at all. (#12, C+) The design has a feel like it’s been made for a tongue-in-cheek version of Alien, which doesn’t give the right impression. We’re stuck with a lot of recurring figures jumbled together and that makes each successive design feel redundant. This isn’t bad but the colors are atrocious. (#13, C) Another failed IMAX design that does absolutely nothing to excite or entice. Just the same tired foreground figure glaring at the viewer, not saying much in the way of “watch me.”

Review: (#1, B+) An intriguing concept with the right amount of creative energy and situational humor makes for a most compelling trailer. The film looks like it will be fun and tongue-in-cheek while also asking important philosophical questions.
(#2, B) There isn’t a lot of new information here except that we get to meet more of the cast around Mickey. Some great actors playing a bit hammy and that might squander some of the good will of that tantalizing firs trailer. Still, there’s enough of the sci-fi comedy vibe to get fans of the genre and of Bong Joon-ho’s to make this a success.
Oscar Prospects:
Bong Joon-ho’s new film could be a contender but it’s January release doesn’t keep the optimism alive.
