Review: (#1, C-) While I suppose advertising solely on Tom Cruise’s presence makes some sort of sense, having something so lacking in excitement and drained of most color makes for a rather dull effort.

(#2, C) While the upside down plane would certainly create a bit of energy in a poster design, that it’s just a slightly more focused scene from the film doesn’t add much and the title is blocky and overbearing.

(#3-#18, C) These character posters (except Cruise’s) are unnecessarily static. They are each distinct in their colors and figures but none of them stand out as something of artistic merit. (#18-#22, C+) These first format-specific designs are simply scenes from the film with little in the way of creative direction. (#22-#23, B-) These efforts try something new with the hand-drawn effort of the first and the framing of the action in the second. (#24-#25, C+) More of the uninspired scene usage in designs. (#26, C+) The bland background and the poor choice of colors helps bring this effort down in spite of its attempt at creative arrangement.

Trailer Rating: C+ / C+

Review: (#1, C+) It’s surprising when a film’s first trailer goes all-out on presenting more action set pieces than the film might plausibly contain. While that does give the impression that one has seen everything so far, it also makes for a confusing and convoluted viewing experience. The producers don’t seem to care about building suspense or expectations and just want to get the kitchen sink before the audience expecting them to fall in (box office) line. It’s just a bit off-putting.

(#2, C+) This series has always struggled to convey narrative in its trailers making the audience guess what’s going on. While that hasn’t stopped the film from being successful, the death-defying stunts still manage to appeal to audiences. This trailer conveys that but continues to do so without emotional investment.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
