Review: (#1, C+) A familiar backdrop to many who enjoy M.C. Escher’s artwork, specifically the Relativity piece, it doesn’t do much to make that idea a thrilling background, statically and with no inspiration, into something more compelling.

(#2, C+) Taking the upside-down room referenced in the trailer and turning it into a poster doesn’t add as much depth or creative energy as necessary. Getting all the characters into one design is a challenge that mostly fails with Dominic Sessa and Morgan Freeman far too small in their posterior positions. (#3-#7, C+) These character posters only reflect half the cast, suggesting there may be more coming but using the same kaleidoscopic effect on each with minimal variance doesn’t generate the energy the film needs.

(#8-#11, C+) The remaining batch of character posters continues the theme of the prior set and don’t merit their own reflection. (#12, C+) Throwing in a bunch of black-suit Aces and then just arranging the players in a paltry diamond pattern doesn’t add the layer of creative energy the film deserves and reminds of the inferior designs previously referenced. (#13, C) Assuming this is one of those stereograms that were all the range several decades ago, it ultimately won’t work on many as the ability to see images within is not a universal ability, which is partly why they fell out of popularity relatively quickly. (#14, C+) Like the earlier designs, this one relies on visual trickery to create movement but not without feeling sparse and underpopulated. (#15, C+) This may be simple and has far too much empty space but at least it feels like something that tried for creativity even if it failed.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B- / C

Review: (#1, C+) Returning the audience to the world of magic as deception for swindlers and crooks, the original cast is back along with a raft of younger players who hope to turn this overpacked sequel into something that will let lightning strike a third time. There’s nothing here that suggests that outcome is likely.

(#2, B-) We’re close enough to release that it’s time for the trailers to give the entire plot away, much of the humor, and most of the surprises. There are sure to still be some in the film but this trailer plays almost like the entire film. It will probably excite fans of the original and its sequel but won’t be likely to bring in new audiences.

(#3, C) Although the prior trailer wasn’t perfect, it was more engaging and interesting than this one with Jesse Eisenberg looking particularly drained and uninterested in this one. Fans of the first film weren’t as excited about the second film but this one looks like an even worse time than the prior.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
